Kwara and Anambra will conduct LG elections on September 21 and 28
Since July, when the Supreme Court granted financial autonomy to local governments, many states have announced or conducted local government elections.
The Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission has scheduled local government elections for September 21, while Anambra State will hold theirs on September 28.
Kwara’s commission is preparing to conduct elections to elect chairmen for its 16 local councils, which have been managed by sole administrators for nearly five years.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is ready for the elections, but the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns.
In Anambra, the Independent Electoral Commission announced that elections will take place in all 21 local councils on September 28, 2024.
Political parties and the public can collect the election timetable and details from the commission’s headquarters in Awka starting August 14, 2024.
In the past month, approximately 15 states have either announced local government elections or held them following the Supreme Court’s ruling that mandates the Federal Government to directly allocate 20.60% of monthly funds to the 774 local governments, rather than through governors.
The court’s landmark decision also prevents governors from dissolving democratically elected local councils.
