Bayern Suffers Nine-Year in Shock Defeat and Fall Eight Points Behind Title Contention
Tuchel expressed confidence after the game, stating, “The defeat today was undeserved. We were incredibly unlucky.”
Bayern Munich suffered a surprising 3-2 loss to underdog Bochum on Sunday, marking their third consecutive defeat for the first time since 2015 and placing them eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga title race.
This result followed a 3-0 league loss to Leverkusen the previous weekend and a 1-0 defeat against Lazio in the Champions League, increasing pressure on coach Thomas Tuchel.
Tuchel remained confident post-match, reiterating, “the loss today wasn’t justified. We were extremely unlucky.”
Furthermore, Bayern found themselves down to 10 men with 13 minutes left when Dayot Upamecano received a red card for elbowing Kevin Stoeger in the box, resulting in a penalty for Bochum. Stoeger converted the penalty, extending Bochum’s lead to 3-1.
Harry Kane scored a goal three minutes before the end to bring Bayern back into contention. However, his subsequent header missed the target, and the match ended with Bochum securing a 3-2 victory.
Tuchel criticized his team’s lack of efficiency in front of goal, stating to DAZN, “We had plenty of high-quality chances that our players would usually convert.”

Bochum’s Takuma Asano equalized after 38 minutes, countering Bayern’s early lead through Jamal Musiala’s goal. Keven Schlotterbeck then put Bochum ahead with a header six minutes later.
Despite Bayern’s efforts in the second half, fan protests against the Bundesliga’s investment plan caused a 12-minute delay in the match. Bochum successfully resisted Bayern’s attacks and held on for the win.
Stoeger, the penalty scorer, expressed relief at the victory, stating, “We believed we could secure a point, and we got all three.”
Bochum coach Thomas Letsch added, “Defeating Bayern feels particularly special considering their talented squad.”
In another match on Sunday, Freiburg’s Michael Gregoritsch scored in the final minute to secure a 3-3 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt.
The game saw back-and-forth action, with both teams displaying strong performances.
