It is Unclear What Charges to bring Against Emefiele for the Economic Mess he left Behind – Akpabio

During a thanksgiving service by Senator Barinada Mpigi in Koroma, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, spoke about the state of Nigeria’s economy.

Akpabio claimed that the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu inherited a Nigerian economy in a mess, which he said was caused by policies carried out by former governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele.

According to Akpabio, the economic situation of the country was terrible when they took office. He likened the situation to what President Obama said about Washington, that one cannot know the situation until they experience it.

The former governor of the Central Bank was blamed for causing the debt and economic mess that Nigeria was in. Akpabio claimed that they did not know what to charge Emefiele with, whether to charge him for putting foam on top of the bill, for illegal possession of firearms, or for printing notes without income.

Akpabio acknowledged that there is hunger in Nigeria because of the policies and actions that were taken, and that every political party should recognize this.

He assured Nigerians that the government is making efforts to end insecurity and ensure that Nigerians have enough to eat.

Akpabio also appealed to Nigerians to be patient as the rot over 60 years cannot be solved in six months.

Emefiele, who was removed as the CBN governor by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023, is currently being prosecuted by the Federal Government over charges bordering on financial crimes.

On January 18, the Federal Government amended the criminal charges filed against the former CBN governor, increasing them from six counts to 20 counts.

In the amendment, Emefiele was charged for alleged criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, procurement fraud, and conspiracy to commit a felony.
