CSOs Protest In Lagos Against High Cost Of Living

Despite warnings on Sunday by the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, against holding any planned protests, police officers were seen at the protest grounds providing security.

Members of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) trooped to the streets of Lagos on Monday to protest the high cost of living and soaring food prices.

Videos on social media showed protesters from a human rights group known as the “Take It Back Movement” carrying placards with various inscriptions in the Ojuelegba area of Lagos State.

On Sunday, the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, warned protesters against disrupting commercial activities.

However, police officers were later seen providing security at the protest grounds. The protesters marched as far as the Maryland axis of the state.

The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified that the claims that the police had warned against holding protests in Lagos were false.

He stated that the police had proactively arrived at the scene to ensure adequate security for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and prevent the procession from being hijacked by hoodlums.

CP Adegoke Fayoade also addressed the protesters before their procession took off.

The protest went as far as the Maryland area, and the police were present throughout the procession.

The protesters conducted themselves properly, and there was no recorded violence. The police provided adequate security and ensured the procession was not hijacked.

Similar protests were also held in Edo and Osun states. Demonstrators marched through the streets with diverse inscriptions such as “End Economic Hardship” and “FG End the Hunger in Nigeria Now” to express their grievances.
