Fubara Vows Swift Action Against Arsonists in Rivers State

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has pledged decisive action against those responsible for setting fire to three local government secretariats in the state. Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of four new commissioners at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Fubara vowed that the arsonists would be identified and held accountable through a collaboration with security agencies.

The governor emphasized that, unlike previous incidents, this attack would not be ignored. He expressed disappointment that recent political unrest had overshadowed his administration’s achievements, but reassured the public that these issues would be addressed. He also announced plans to dedicate a day later this month to highlight the administration’s accomplishments.

Fubara had earlier warned newly appointed local government chairmen of potential attacks and commended his supporters for remaining calm during the recent violent confrontations. He underscored the importance of increased cooperation to address pressing issues, including crude oil theft and boosting oil production.

Addressing the newly sworn-in commissioners, Governor Fubara urged them to work closely with him to continue advancing the state amidst ongoing socio-economic challenges. He noted that his selection of the commissioners was based on loyalty, dedication, and the need for regional political balance.

Among the new appointees are Otamiri John-Ngubo, former Caretaker Committee Chairman and APP chairmanship candidate for Etche, and Evans Bipi, former Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ogu/Bolo, known for his role in the 2013 Rivers State House of Assembly brawl. Also appointed are former State Lawmaker Benibo Alabraba and Israel Lebura-Ngbuelu.

The arson attacks targeted the Ikwere and Emohua Local Government secretariats, following the withdrawal of police officers from all 23 council secretariats by Commissioner of Police Kayode Egbetokun.

In response to the escalating tension, President Bola Tinubu ordered the Nigerian Police Force to restore security across the affected areas. Governor Fubara’s determination to bring the perpetrators to justice underscores his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Rivers State.
