President Tinubu Calls for Debt Forgiveness and Global Reform at UN General Assembly
At the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu delivered a compelling plea for global reforms, emphasizing the need for debt forgiveness for developing nations. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu urged world leaders to prioritize debt relief for countries like Nigeria, allowing them to focus on much-needed developmental projects.
A Call for Debt Forgiveness and Financial Reform
Speaking on behalf of Nigeria and other developing countries, Tinubu stressed that sustainable economic progress in the global South is hindered by mounting debt. “We must ensure that any reform of the international financial system includes comprehensive debt relief measures,” Tinubu said, highlighting how current financial burdens limit the ability of developing nations to invest in their people and economies.
The Nigerian leader also called for a transparent and equitable multilateral trading system, underscoring the importance of creating opportunities for all countries, particularly those in the global South, to participate in the global economy on fair terms.
Multilateralism: A Path to Global Cooperation
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to multilateralism, President Tinubu called for stronger cooperation among UN member states. He warned against the rising trend of nationalism, which he said undermines collective global efforts to solve shared challenges such as terrorism, climate change, poverty, and hyper-inflation.
“While commitment to multilateralism offers the surest guarantee of global action to address the existential challenges we face, singularity and nationalism are undermining the aspirations toward peaceful and collective resolutions,” Tinubu stated.

Addressing Global Challenges: Security, Climate Change, and Economic Inequality
Tinubu highlighted a range of global challenges that require immediate attention, including terrorism, poverty, hunger, and environmental degradation. He emphasized the pressing need for international collaboration in addressing the root causes of these issues—poverty, inequality, and exclusion—and cited examples such as the ongoing conflicts in Sudan and the Middle East.
He particularly drew attention to the devastating impacts of climate change, which has exacerbated flooding in Nigeria and other countries, and called for the global community to fulfill its commitments made at various climate change summits (COP). Failure to act, he warned, would only worsen the effects of climate change, which no country can escape.
Strengthening African Representation in the UN Security Council
In a powerful appeal for UN reform, President Tinubu advocated for Africa’s inclusion in the permanent membership of the UN Security Council. He argued that Africa deserves to be represented in this global decision-making body, given its significant geopolitical importance.
“The Security Council should be expanded to reflect the diversity and plurality of the world. Africa must be accorded the respect it deserves,” Tinubu said, encouraging an acceleration of the reform process to give African nations permanent seats at the table.
Tackling Insecurity and Corruption
On the issue of insecurity, Tinubu emphasized that terrorism, banditry, and insurgency remain significant threats to both national and international peace. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to combating these threats, announcing that the country will host a High-Level African Counter-Terrorism Meeting in April 2024, aimed at finding concrete solutions to the challenges posed by extremist groups.
Tinubu also called for stronger international cooperation to recover stolen assets and illicit financial flows, particularly from developing countries to developed economies. He emphasized that this is a critical step toward promoting global justice and reducing corruption.
A Call for Unity and Global Action
In his address, President Tinubu reminded world leaders of the foundational principles of the UN—peace, sustainable development, and human rights—and called for renewed commitment to these ideals. He lamented that many of the challenges discussed in previous UN summits, such as inequality, conflict, and economic instability, remain unresolved.
The Nigerian president concluded by stressing the need for global unity and bold reforms to address these challenges. “Our people need hope, opportunity, and a chance at a better future,” Tinubu said, urging world leaders to take meaningful action to ensure a more inclusive, fair, and secure world for all.
