D’Tigress of Nigeria Defeat Australia in Opening Match of the 2024 Paris Olympics

Nigeria’s D’Tigress defeated Australia’s Opals 75-62 in their opening match of the Paris 2024 Olympics, marking Nigeria’s first Olympic victory since Athens 2004.

Coached by Rena Wakama, the Nigerian team delivered a strong performance at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium on Monday.

Despite being ranked 12th compared to Australia’s third, D’Tigress quickly erased any perceived disadvantage.

From the start, D’Tigress took control, with Murjanatu Musa, Ezinne Kalu, and Amy Okonkwo excelling in securing loose balls and shooting accurately.

They led 18-17 at the end of the first quarter and extended their lead to 41-28 by halftime.

Kalu shone with her three-point shooting, while Murjanatu contributed with key blocks and steals.

Although the Opals mounted a comeback in the third quarter and early in the fourth, D’Tigress held on for a historic win.

Their next Group B match is against France on Thursday.
