Senate Clears Tinubu’s Nominees for South West Development Commission Board

The Senate Committee on South West Regional Development has screened and confirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s nominees for the governing board of the newly established South West Development Commission (SWDC).

Chaired by Senator Yunus Akintunde (Oyo Central), the committee charged the incoming board to set the pace for regional transformation by drawing inspiration from the legacy of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who championed development in the old Western Region.

While commending the calibre of individuals nominated, the committee emphasized the need for prudence, cautioning the commission against engaging in contracts without guaranteed funding.

Senator Akintunde stated that the Senate would not tolerate contract abandonment or financial mismanagement.

Also speaking, Deputy Chairman of the Committee, Senator Gbenga Daniel (Ogun East) and former senator representing Ogun West ,Tolu Odebiyi urged the governing board to live up to expectations, describing the commission as a potential model for other regional development agencies in the country.

The report of the screening is expected to be presented to the Senate Committee of the Whole for final adoption after resumption.
