Kwankwaso’s nephew and others arrested for ₦347m drug procurement scam

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) has arrested the Permanent Secretary of the Kano Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ibrahim Kabara, the State ALGON Chairman, Abdullahi Bashir, and the interim Council Chairman of Tarauni Local Government, along with five other individuals.

They are suspected of being involved in corruption related to the procurement of drugs and medical equipment for Kano State’s 44 local governments.

The Commission has also summoned the Managing Director of Novomed Pharmaceuticals, Musa Garba, and the nephew of former Kano State Governor Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for questioning as part of its ongoing investigation.

The arrested officials are suspected of violating the Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission Law, the Public Procurement Law, and the Financial Management Law.

The allegations involve the awarding of a contract for the supply of drugs and medical equipment, which was reportedly carried out in violation of statutory provisions and without obtaining the necessary consent and approval from Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf.

A source close to the commission revealed that Abdullahi Ibrahim Bashir, the ALGON Chairman, admitted to facilitating an illegal payment of ₦402.6m for procurement. Of this, ₦347.7m was allegedly disbursed by 38 local governments before the Commission’s investigation began.

“The actions of these officials clearly violated the law,” said the source, who requested anonymity due to the investigation’s sensitive nature. “They ignored necessary protocols and proceeded with the contract without proper authorization.”

The arrested officials were taken to the commission’s office at 11 AM on Tuesday and remained in custody for questioning as of 11:15 AM.

The PCACC has pledged to continue its investigation, promising to reveal the full extent of the alleged corruption.

“We are committed to holding all involved in this illegal act accountable,” the source added.
