Police Hunt for Killers of Personnel in Abuja Shiite Attack
Police reported that an attack occurred at Wuse Junction near the traffic light, where assailants targeted a police checkpoint and assaulted officers on duty.
The Nigeria Police Force condemned what it termed an unprovoked attack by members of the banned Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as the Shi’ite group, on police personnel in Abuja on Sunday.
Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi stated in a Monday release that the armed attackers, wielding machetes, improvised explosive devices, and knives, launched several violent assaults, resulting in the immediate deaths of two police officers and leaving three others unconscious and hospitalized.
Additionally, three police patrol vehicles were set on fire during the incident, according to Adejobi.
In accordance with the directive from Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the police have arrested 97 suspects and recovered several weapons used in the attack.
The IGP reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to apprehending all individuals involved and bringing the perpetrators to justice, underscoring the importance of maintaining law and order and resisting any form of unrest in the country.
The statement condemned the unprovoked killings of police officers, stating that those responsible have disrupted peace.
As investigations progress, the Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to uncovering the full extent of this attack and preventing future violence against officers.
The IGP expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen officers, mourning their loss and wishing a swift recovery to those receiving treatment.
The police also requested the public’s support and understanding in their efforts to uphold law and order amid extremist threats and violent crimes nationwide.
