NCDC Monitors HMPV Situation, Classifies Nigeria’s Risk as ‘Moderate’

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has announced that the Federal Government is closely monitoring the outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), classifying the country’s risk level as “moderate.” The agency assured Nigerians that proactive safety measures are being implemented to bolster the nation’s preparedness and response capacity.

In a public health advisory issued late Monday, the NCDC highlighted that a comprehensive risk assessment was conducted in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (USCDC), and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

“The assessment classified the risk of HMPV for Nigeria as moderate. This evaluation will guide preparedness efforts, decision-making, and response strategies to mitigate potential impacts,” the advisory stated.

Steps Taken at Points of Entry

The NCDC emphasized that it is collaborating with Port Health Authorities to enhance preparedness at international points of entry (PoEs). These measures aim to reduce the potential risk of HMPV transmission through international travel.

Key actions include conducting a comprehensive situation analysis at all PoEs to assess current readiness levels.

False Public Health Emergency Claims

Addressing misinformation, the NCDC debunked claims that the World Health Organization has declared HMPV a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

“This is false and should be disregarded. Recent reports indicate a significant rise in Human Metapneumovirus cases in China and increased respiratory infections linked to HMPV in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, particularly during the winter season,” the agency clarified.

The advisory also cited data from the UKHSA, which reported a surge in hospital admissions due to HMPV-related complications, particularly among children under five and older adults in care homes.

Public Assurance

The NCDC reiterated its commitment to providing Nigerians with accurate and timely information, urging heightened vigilance and adherence to preventive measures.

These efforts underline Nigeria’s readiness to address the potential risks posed by HMPV and ensure the health and safety of its citizens.
