Finnish Gov’t. Confirms Actions Are Being Taken Regarding Simon Ekpa’s Case

Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Elina Valtonen, announced that the case involving Ekpa, whose activities were reported to Finland by Nigeria, is now before Finnish courts.

She made this statement during a press conference in Abuja alongside her Nordic counterparts.

Self-proclaimed Biafra Prime Minister Ekpa, a proponent of sit-at-home directives in southeastern Nigeria, was arrested in Finland in February 2023 for threatening that elections would not occur in the region ahead of the presidential and national assembly elections. He was detained at his home in Lahti, according to Helsingin Sanomat.

Though the mainstream leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) suspended the sit-at-home exercise, Ekpa insisted on its observance every Monday to protest the detention of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.

IPOB distanced itself from Ekpa, who was scheduled for an interview prior to his arrest. After his release, he has remained active on social media, promoting his pro-Biafran messages.

Valtonen participated in a Nordic delegation, including ministers from Sweden, Iceland, Norway, and Denmark, to enhance trade relations with Nigeria.

They emphasized the need to combat violent extremism in West Africa and pursue sustainable development goals during their visit, which continues in Ghana.
